Mold From Yeah to YIKES!

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

Mold spores SERVPRO of Shrewsbury/ Northborough knows what to do if unwanted mold grows in your home.

Did you know over 100,000 kinds of fungi have been identified? Fungi and mold naturally occur in our environment and not all of these are unwanted, in fact, some are quite ordinary and helpful.

The Ordinary

Fungi can produce some very useful results. That unique flavor in blue cheese- it’s the result of mold. Enjoy mushrooms on your pizza… edible fungi.  Penicillin- a product of mold (Penicillin chrysogenum). Yeast is a type of fungi used in preparing breads, baked goods and other food products, including some alcoholic beverages. The next time you enjoy a beer and sandwich, you can say “thanks for the fungi”. Ok, maybe that’s a bit much, you see where I’m going with this.

The Unwelcome

Even though some forms of mold can be beneficial, there are other forms that can be unwelcome and might effect the health of people and animals in your home or business.

Sounds a whole lot less fun that mushroom pizza and pint of beer, doesn’t it?

Intrusion of water into your home or business can result in mold growth. Storm damage, plumbing or equipment failures, long standing leaks and poor humidity control can all lead to water intrusion. When water intrusion is not addressed right away, the resulting damage can present increased risk of unwanted mold growth. If the humidity and moisture levels in a water-damaged environment aren’t addressed promptly, mold spores may grow and multiply rapidly.

Take Precautions

The professionals of SERVPRO Shrewsbury/ Westborough handle water damage and intrusion every day. We know prompt action is required to prevent mold growth. If you are aware of an ongoing moisture problem in your home or business be on the lookout for the following:

  • Evidence of past moisture problems that may have led to undetected mold growth
  • Excessive humidity.

These conditions may require the expertise of a qualified Indoor Air Quality/ Environmental Professional to inspect the building for mold growth and water damage problems. Not to worry, we’re Here to Help.
